Sculptor Leonardo Drew is the next contemporary artist to transform the Museum’s first floor galleries with a new site-specific commission. Known for his large-scale, multi-dimensional installations, Drew employs organic materials to create topographies that are at once looming in size and stunning in their intricacies. For Number 235T, Drew will anchor sculptural pieces that he refers to as “planets” and surround them with hundreds of smaller objects as he works to identify the interconnectedness of them all.

This commission is the latest in a series initiated by the Carter in 2015 to respond to works in the Museum’s collection through the perspective of American artists working today.

Enjoy a new outdoor sculpture exhibition by Santa Fe artists Jennifer and Kevin Box. The show presents a fresh look at paper folding in the 21st Century with large-scale origami-inspired metal sculptures.

Emerging butterflies, big birds, grazing deer, and blooming flowers all celebrate the process of plant pollination. The colorful, whimsical, and kinetic sculptures were created in collaboration with modern masters of paper folding; Robert J. Lang, Michael G. LaFosse and Beth Johnson. Their intricate folds have been transformed into monumental metal sculptures by Kevin Box and his studio team to inspire, educate and entertain audiences in the outdoor setting of public gardens.

FLORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN is presented by Rosa’s Café.

Conversations between new acquisitions, infrequently seen works on paper, and permanent collection favorites take place throughout the Modern’s first floor, celebrating key narratives from modern and contemporary art. Andy Warhol’s Flowers, 1970, and Anselm Kiefer’s Papst Alexander VI: Die goldene Bulle (Pope Alexander VI: The Golden Bull), 1996, grace the Grand Lobby.

In the initial galleries, Willem de Kooning’s Two Women, 1954–55, Mark Rothko’s White Band No. 27, 1954, and Sam Francis’s Untitled, from Mako Series, 1967, demonstrate the influence and variety of mid-century abstraction. Moving into the 1960s and 1970s, Andy Warhol’s Twenty-Five Colored Marilyns, 1962, and James Rosenquist’s F-111, 1974, exemplify Pop art’s simultaneous celebration and critique of consumerism, mass media, and pop culture. Works by Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds, Richard Prince, and Ed Ruscha come together to prompt dialogues around American identity.

In the subsequent galleries, artists take inspiration from the land to create sculptures, drawings, photographs, and performances, crafting narratives that range from the autobiographical to the philosophical. Linda Ridgway’s unique cast bronze sculpture Three Squares, 2001, pays homage to a family idiom by connecting the provision provided by a parent with that provided by nature. Marina Abramović’s The Lovers, 1988, documents the artist’s physical and psychological journey as she traversed the Great Wall of China, while Robyn O’Neil’s These final hours embrace at last; this is our ending, this is our past, 2007, employs an “everyman” perspective to explore themes of evolution, catastrophe, and apocalypse.

Wangechi Mutu’s The Seated III, 2019, joins two other bronze sculptures looking out over the reflecting pond, CLEAN SLATE, 2018, by KAWS, and Drape, 1999, by Joseph Havel. All three works combine familiar imagery with elements of surprise, an experience that recurs throughout the permanent collection galleries.

Organized by Curator María Elena Ortiz, Surrealism and Us is inspired by the history of Surrealism in the Caribbean with connections to notions of the Afrosurreal in the United States. Representing a global perspective, this exhibition is the first intergenerational show dedicated to Caribbean and African diasporic art presented at the Modern.

Inspired by the essay “1943: Surrealism and Us” by Suzanne Césaire, the presentation includes over 80 artworks from the 1940s to the present day, in a wide range of media such as painting, sculpture, drawing, video, and installation. Centered on the intersection of Caribbean aesthetics, Afrosurrealism, and Afrofuturism, Surrealism and Us explores how Caribbean and Black artists interpreted a modernist movement. Artworks, framed within a pre-existing history of Black resistance and creativity, illustrate how Caribbean and Black artists reinterpreted the European avant-garde for their own purposes.

    Shaping the Future Together:

Enhancing Safety through a Proposed Public Improvement District

The City of Fort Worth is working with West 7th and Foundry District business owners to share information about the proposed establishment of a Public Improvement District (PID) aimed at enhancing safety in the area. PIDs are special zones where property owners can fund improvements and maintenance beyond what the city provides through additional assessments based on their business’ property value. The proposed Near Westside PID – which is only focused on commercial properties – seeks to enhance the district by funding additional police presence, security cameras, lighting, and safety technologies, among other improvements. This initiative aims to create a safer, more attractive environment for businesses and visitors alike. Business owners must consider and opt-in to the PID for it to be formally created, so those seeking further information or who may be interested in supporting the creation of the Near Westside PID are encouraged to reach out to the City's PID Administrator.

In the Renaissance, monarchs and religious leaders glorified their power and wealth through the art of tapestry, commissioning some of Europe’s greatest artists to commemorate significant events through the lavish medium. Monumental tapestries, much more costly than paintings, could serve as immersive and elaborate tools for dynamic storytelling and political propaganda, depicting histories in fine wool, silk, and metal-wrapped thread at monumental scale.

Art and War in the Renaissance: The Battle of Pavia Tapestries marks the first time that this entire cycle of seven large-scale tapestries—some of the most awe-inspiring examples of this often-overlooked artform—has been on view in the United States. The tremendous images, each about twenty-seven feet wide and fourteen feet high, commemorate Emperor Charles V’s decisive victory over French King Francis I that ended the sixteenth-century Italian Wars. Designed by court artist Bernard van Orley, the tapestries were woven in Brussels by Willem and Jan Dermoyen in deeply saturated hues and exquisite detail, luxuriously highlighted with gold. Each composition is packed with figures including richly adorned military leaders, horsemen, and mercenary foot soldiers armed with swords, pikes, and firearms, all inhabiting beautifully undulating landscapes dotted with hills, towns, and forests. The immersive scale of the tapestries draws viewers into the world of Renaissance history, military technology, and fashion and will be complemented by impressive examples of arms and armor from the period.
