Waste to Wonder explores how creativity and innovation can transform discarded materials into something new. Made in collaboration with the Tarrant County Education Foundation, the exhibit examines how long common items take to decompose, what materials people used before plastics, and how artists and companies are rethinking waste today. Interactive stations invite visitors to sort materials, test recycling knowledge, and explore how many bottles, cans, or plastic bags it takes to make familiar products. Designed using repurposed materials where possible, Waste to Wonder acknowledges that sustainability is an ongoing effort and that imperfect can still be impactful.

Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers is the artist’s largest exhibition to date and his first major museum survey in more than a decade. Johnson, one of the most acclaimed artists of his generation, is internationally recognized for his multidisciplinary practice that spans painting, sculpture, film, and installation. His work is represented in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Tracing Johnson’s trajectory from his early experiments in photography and video to his recent materially complex paintings and assemblages, A Poem for Deep Thinkers engages art history, philosophy, and Black popular culture as frameworks for exploring the human psyche. The exhibition reflects on themes of history, identity, masculinity, parenthood, and self-care, underscoring Johnson’s role as both an interpreter of art history and a shaper of contemporary culture.

This exhibition brings together nearly 90 works, including black-soap paintings, spray-painted text pieces, monumental sculptures, film, and video. Highlights include a site-specific installation, an outdoor sculpture, and two works activated through live performance.

This extraordinary exhibition showcases more than sixty objects in silver, gold, enamel, and precious jewels, given by European monarchs and rulers to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, a site of Christian devotion and pilgrimage, where they have been used in religious ceremonies for centuries. Including dazzling reliquaries, crosses, candlesticks, chalices, and vestments representing the height of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century craftsmanship, many of these objects have no equivalent anywhere else in the world. Traveling to only two venues in North America, the exhibition represents the first—and possibly only—time these treasures will be seen in the US.

Black Photojournalism shines a light on the groundbreaking work of more than 60 photographers working across the United States in the world-changing decades between 1945 and the mid-1980s. Featuring over 250 photographs, the exhibition highlights the essential role of Black photojournalists in documenting both pivotal historical events as well as the richness of everyday life, offering a fuller and more nuanced portrayal of Black experiences in America.

Organized by Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, this expansive exhibition highlights photographs from their holdings of the Charles “Teenie” Harris Archive and is drawn from archives and collections across the country. The works on view reveal the creativity, resilience, and impact of Black-owned media outlets such as the Afro American News, Atlanta Daily World, Chicago Defender, Ebony, and Pittsburgh Courier. Together, these images showcase photojournalism as both a record of history and a tool of empowerment, underscoring its lasting influence on how stories are told and remembered.

    Family Program: "Box City"
A Hands-On Celebration of Architecture Week

Friday, April 17 from 5–8 pm
    Saturday, April 18 from 10 am–5 pm
Modern Grand Lobby and Education Studio
Free admission | All materials provided

Join AIA Fort Worth and the Modern for an engaging, family-friendly celebration of Architecture Week with Box City! This interactive workshop, led by members and educators from AIA Fort Worth along with architect Ashleigh Hood and artist Claire Kennedy, invites children and families to explore the principles of art, architecture, and urban design through creative play and sculptural building.

Participants will begin by learning with Ashleigh Hood about architectural concepts, city planning, principles of design, and the role of permits and building functions within a community. Guided by this foundation, and under Claire Kennedy’s creative direction, participants will then use predominantly recycled materials to design and construct their own sculptural, officially “permitted” buildings, contributing to a collaborative miniature sculptural city installed in Grand Lobby.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own boxes—such as shipping, shoe, or cereal boxes—to transform into buildings, though materials will also be provided. The layout of Box City, inspired by a special painting in the Modern’s permanent collection, will come to life on a large-scale, pre-painted canvas serving as the city grid and vibrant foundation for the collaborative creation. Additionally, a public park will be incorporated into the city layout, where guests will have the opportunity to design small sculptures, contributing to a public art installation within the cityscape.

Perfect for all ages, this hands-on program fosters creativity, teamwork, and deeper appreciation for the built environment. Drop in anytime and take part in building a sculptural city! The completed Box City will remain on display in the Modern’s lobby through the end of the day on Sunday, April 19.
